When I was just starting out as a young newspaper writer, I had the good fortune of working with a more experienced colleague who took me under her wing.

My friend, Lisa, would have me pull up a chair next to her in the newsroom so we could go through my articles together on the small, monochrome video display terminal. That was our prehistoric version of a word processing computer back in the late 1970s. The screens were only a few inches tall and you could only see about a dozen lines of type at a time.

Even for a two-paragraph summary of a high school basketball game, we would go through my little article word-for-word, punctuation mark by punctuation mark, and Lisa would teach me the correct techniques.
